Stormlight archive the way of kings5/29/2023 ![]() Cryptic, isn’t it? This novel is what you’d call epic. Surgebinding and Shardwielding can return the magics of ancient days can become ours again. The last is the highprince, a warlord whose eyes have opened to the past as his thirst for battle wanes. The third is the liar, a young woman who wears a scholar’s mantle over the heart of a thief. The second is the assassin, a murderer who weeps as he kills. The first is the surgeon, forced to put aside healing to become a soldier in the most brutal war of our time. But ignore the steel long enough, and it will eventually rust away. Or was that victory an illusion all along? Did our enemies realize that the harder they fought, the stronger we resisted? Perhaps they saw that the heat and the hammer only make for a better grade of sword. Nothing, it appears, is more challenging to the souls of men than victory itself. ![]() A time when there was still magic in the world and honor in the hearts of men. ![]() The age before the Heralds abandoned us and the Knights Radiant turned against us. Stephen king langoliers book5/29/2023 ![]() One of the passengers, pilot Brian Engle (David Morse), commandeers the plane and lands the group in Bangor, Maine, only for them to discover that there's no one on the ground either. The Langoliers follows a group of ten passengers aboard a Red Eye flight from Los Angeles to Boston who awaken to discover everyone else aboard has vanished. ![]() With the advance of filmmaking techniques since its first adaptation, particularly with respect to CGI The Langoliers should be the next Stephen King book to be up for the reboot treatment, either in film or mini-series form. As the Master of Horror, King crafted a very unnerving and creepy story in The Langoliers, along with creating a very tortured villain. Due to the limitations in technology at the time, The Langoliers was held back on a technical level from the potency of King's novella. In fact, The Langoliers would also benefit from a reboot in another way. RELATED: Stephen King: What Went Wrong With The Dark Tower Movie ![]() While adaptations of Stephen King novels have always been popular, the current wave suggests The Langoliers' time has come for a modern re-telling. Others, like Doctor Sleep, have acted as continuations of older Stephen King movies, The Shining in Doctor Sleep's case. Several, such as the IT films and The Stand mini-series are reboots of previous King adaptations. Fast-forward to the 21st century, and there's been a major resurgence of Stephen King adaptations on the big and small screens. ![]()

The sense of style book5/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() In this short, cheerful, and eminently practical book, Pinker shows how writing depends on imagination, empathy, coherence, grammatical knowhow, and an ability to savor and reverse-engineer the good prose of others. Instead, he applies insights from the sciences of language and mind to the challenge of crafting clear, coherent, and stylish prose. Rethinking the usage guide for the 21st century, Pinker doesn't carp about the decline of language or recycle pet peeves from the rulebooks of a century ago. " A short and entertaining book on the modern art of writing well by New York Times bestselling author Steven Pinker Why is so much writing so bad, and how can we make it better? Is the English language being corrupted by texting and social media? Do the kids today even care about good writing? Why should any of us care? In The Sense of Style, the bestselling linguist and cognitive scientist Steven Pinker answers these questions and more. ![]()

Tove jansson illustrations5/29/2023 ![]() Not that this alternative was any less bleak. “She had to create alternatives to the world she was living in,” says Jansson biographer Boel Westin. It was the horrors of that time that also served as inspiration for the first Moomin books. If the war had ended differently the consequences for her would have been fatal. ![]() Her courage in challenging public opinion cannot be underestimated. As Finland had entered into an alliance with Germany in 1940, her work caused consternation among the authorities and the magazine came perilously close to being charged with insulting the head of a friendly state. ![]() Her cartoons reveal a pathetic and ridiculous clown behind the monster who threatened Europe. She had been mocking Hitler in the pages of Garm since as early 1935 but the war heightened her satirical bite. The war years were traumatic for Jansson but also provided a great stimulus to create. ![]()
